  2. She’s finally finished. The bits of white are epoxy putty to fix some issues that cropped up after baking. Normally my next step would be painting but I want to leave my options open to maybe have her cast as some point (though it will kill me to have to cut the arms off for the mold making process).

  3. Getting pretty close to finished with this sculpt. Of course I had to add a cephalopod.

  4. Finished custom Feejee Mermaid sculpture. The mermaid is painted polymer clay with rabbit fur suspended in resin “water”.

  7. Further work on the base which is coming along well. Made a few aborted attempts at the “hair”, still haven’t quite figured out what’s going to work there.

  8. Finally getting back to this sculpture after a few months now that I’ve decided where I want to go with it. She’s going to be covered in coral and sea creatures as a sort of reef guardian.

  9. One last photo of the underpainting. I tweaked a few more things after taking the photo but that’s mostly it. On to color!

  10. Little change of pace. A lot of my sculpting friends on Facebook have been posting about digital sculpting and since Sculptris is free I decided to give it a go tonight. This is the result of 4 hours sculpting and another hour figuring out how to render it in Blender (I’ve used Blender before but just upgraded to 2.6 which has a much different interface from 2.4).

  11. Worked a bit more on the underpainting. This will be the last update for at least a few days, I spent too much time working on this without taking breaks and now my neck and shoulders are really sore. In the meantime if you have any questions go ahead and ask me.

  12. Been working on the underpainting all day, it’s basically just dioxazine purple and white. It’s still pretty rough and it will take at least another day if not longer to finish the underpainting. Once that’s done I can start glazing colors. I’m going to use a pretty limited palette for the final painting, stick with blues and greens mostly, probably my warmest color will be yellow ochre in the skintone and some of the sealife that will be living in the foreground rocks,

  13. Printed out the drawing at the right size and transferred it to the 11”x14” canvas. Need to seal it with workable fixative and clear gesso then on to painting!

  14. Preparing an 11”x14” canvas. Also made a mahl stick out of an old aluminum curtain rod while waiting for gesso to dry. Been meaning to make one for a while.

  15. I had to scrap the original version of this and start over, too many perspective and anatomy issues. The reference photos I had been using weren’t ideal so I booted up Daz Studio (better than my little wooden manikins by far) and posed some figures in there the way I wanted and set up the perspective angle to match what I had in my head. Combining that with the reference photos gave me a much better sense of where everything should be. Next I need to make decisions about the background and what size canvas or board I want to paint this on (I’ll take my scans and print them at the size I want)
